Kreta Ayer Wet Market - Part 3 (Fish Stalls)

The guy behind this fish stall is giving the look that he dislike me taking photo...hehehe. Glad that I did not took photo of the fishes at his stall....lol or maybe he is jealous I did not take photo of his stall...hahaha

Fishes like the above are going cheap at 11.30 am almost closing time. The fish vendor would chop the large fish into smaller pieces (about 300 to 400 gm) and sold them for about $5 and cheaper if you buy more.

Each plate of the above fishes (numbered about 5 to 6) cost only $4.
Prawns can go for about $6 to $7 per kg.
More photos of the stalls in the wet market coming up tomorrow.....

Skywatch-Fighter Planes

Hahaha....I caught these fighter planes as they were on display for National Day Preview last Saturday.

Sorry for the small image of these planes, they were too fast for me. I could not find time to zoom on them. Was lucky that I caught them on camera....lol. You have to click on them to enlarge.
Now I am satisfied with these photos but hope to be standby mode on the actual day of National Day on 9th August 2008 to zoom on these planes if I am lucky enough....lol

Kreta Ayer Wet Market - Part 2

Hahaha...yesterday, many complimented that the market looked dry for a wet market. Here is another part of the market which is wet. The reason for being wet was mostly the fish stalls vendors washing the floors because of the fishes they sold. If they do not spray water, the floor would stink because of the scaling, cleaning of fishes they did for customers. The scaling and cleaning of fishes are free of charge for the customers. Now you know why it is known as wet market.

Customers buying fishes from a fish vendor.

Fishes and prawns are cheaper at this market than other wet markets around Singapore.

Best time to buy cheap fishes and prawns would be after 11.30 am. The market operates only half a day. Therefore the fish vendors are eager to get rid of their fishes at cheaper prices around that time before they call it a day at 1 pm.

More photos of fish stalls after skywatch friday.

Kreta Ayer Wet Market-Part 1

This is the basement of Kreta Ayer. It is known as Kreta Ayer Wet Market. Why wet market? The floors and surroundings are often routinely sprayed and washed with water—to the extent of flooding it at frequent intervals—which gave it the name "wet market". (For more information on wet market, you can view it from here.

Look at the newly renovated market, it is spacious and very clean. It is so spacious and suitable for those in wheelchairs to move about. Bravo because the population is aging and we need more places to be user friendly to those in wheelchairs.

Pork Stalls

Fruits Stalls

Vegetables Stalls
The floorings of the above stalls are cleaner and drier. My next post will show the seafood stalls that have wet floorings...lol

Kreta Ayer Market-Shopping

Still at Kreta Ayer. Kreta Ayer Market consists of a wet market in the basement and shops on the ground floor while the food centre is on the 2nd floor (which I had posted a photo yesterday).

On the ground floor are many shops selling clothes, shoes, bags, cloths, etc. It is very spacious and it is non air conditioned. But you wont feel sweaty although it is non air conditioned because it had a very high ceiling and plenty of walking spaces.

This is the place to shop and you could bargain for your products.

My next few posts would be the wet market in the basement. It would be very interesting to some of you all.

Kreta Ayer Food Centre

Kreta Ayer (meaning bullock cart in Malay) Food Centre was renovated and recently reopen to the public. This is the food centre where most old tenants are back selling the good and yummy food. The new place is airy and spacious and now have more tables and chairs for us to enjoy our food.

Skywatch-Planes

I was too late with my camera when I saw the apache flying above me. By the time I grabbed the camera, the plane fly too far away. Anyway I have another photo of the apaches in my previous post.

Another plane flying past after the apache. I guess it is always at this time of the year where the airforce are rehearsing for the National Day parade next month. So next month, I must tried to capture these planes as they fly past me. :)

Underpass

This underpass is located near Novena Square and United Square. It was a long underpass and I found the underpass to be very clean. But the longest underpass I took would be at the The Link at City Hall MRT Station.

You can view another underpass in my previous post.

Bicycle Bay

This is a bicycle parking bay. (Sorry for the blur photo - it was taken by my mobile phone)
Wondered if the owner is parking just the wheel or did someone stole the bicycle and left only the wheel locked in the bicycle bay.

For more bicycle parking bay, you can view my previous posting.

Chinatown Shophouses(5)

More photos of shophouses. Some are used as shops, residential and offices.

The above shophouses are converted to be a boutique hotel. To know more about The Scarlet-A Boutique Hotel, you can view their website.

I love the designs of these shophouses and very fascinated by their windows. I always love taking photos of wndows and doors.

Closer look at the foral designs.

Chinatown Shophouses (4)

I like this beautiful built shophouse. You could see that it was built in 1910. In the olden days, builders would engraved the year the building was built on them. I am glad the owner kept most of the original architectural designs except for a fresh coat of paint.

Another beautiful architecturally built shophouse in the heart of chinatown.

Inside this building are many different shops and offices.

Chinatown Shophouses (3)

This shop house is of the same design as the shophouse that I posted in my earlier post on chinatown shophouses (2), but the owner did not do a very elaborate painting and decoration on its building.

The shophouse with red and white paintings on its exterior was the one I posted in previous post.

A closer look and comparision on the windows of the two shophouses. The original shophouse bear some european designs while the newly painted shophouse was painted red to make it looked very chinese.

Another shophouse being renovated by a new owner. Look at the circled area, a plant decided to grow inside a crack of the wall. It must be planted by some birds carrying some seeds to the building. :)
I have more beautiful photos of shophouses in chinatown in later posts.

Scary Face in the Cloud

Do you see what I see? I felt that the cloud looked like a scary face and there was some white smoke coming out of its mouth.

Chinatown shophouses (2)

More photos of shophouses in Chinatown. These shophouses had a long history and had been here since the British Rules. Many had been restored and renovated. Some are used as shops and restaurants while some are used as offices. The one above with the red windows is a chinese restaurant called Yum Cha, selling "dim sum".

Chinatown shophouses

This is just one of the very old shophouses presevered. These buildings were built during the British rule, that is why you could see many buildings with Victorian architecture. For more information of chinatown and its buildings you can view them here.

By night, some of the streets in chinatown would become a food street.

Painting and Redecoration Works at HDB Apartment

From the view of my brother's flat I could these workers doing the painting work on the opposite block of flats. It is a very dangerous job for the painters even though they have safety belts, etc.

These are HDB flats which majority of Singaporean lived in. Every 5 years the town council would repaint and redecorate the estates.

For more information on the public housing in Singapore, you could see from here.

Skywatch-Novena Square

This is office building cum shopping mall at Novena Square. The sky reflected on the windows of the office building would make a good photo for skywatch.

Another direction taken of the building which reflected some condominium buildings in the vinicity.
