Ang Mo Kio

Singapore has many estates all over the island that are self contained. Self contained meaning, they have all the facilities inside the estate. There are malls, library, clinics, shops, market, hawker centres, etc. Residents dont have to travel all the way to the city to get their shopping done. They can just do it right at their own estate.

This is part of Ang Mo Kio. Dont be fooled by my photos. The photo might make the town looked quiet and sleepy but if you would to go to the central of Ang Mo Kio, there's where the action is.

It is more crowded and noisy in the central where most shops and malls are located.

The word "Ang Mo Kio" has many meanings. It sounded like tomatoes in Hokkien but some thought that the estate was named after bridge (Kio) and Ang Mo (Red Hair). It could be a British Engineer (probably with red hair) was responsible to built a bridge in this estate and the locals named the area Ang Mo Kio. You could read the whole story in Infopedia.

The blue building in the above photo is the library in Ang Mo Kio. But nowadays, we have smaller libraries located in the malls in newer towns, so as to encourage more to read books.

I spotted a nursery beside the library.
Sorry no photos of Ang Mo Kio Central cause I did not venture into there and I dont stay in Ang Mo Kio.

National Library - Part 2 - Visitors Centre

Continued from yesterday's post on the National Library of Singapore. I could only show you the outside of the 5th floor visitor Centre. I could not take any photos inside the library and do not want to disturb the people in there too.

Full of greenery outside the visitors centre and users can come here and do their projects or listen to stories being told.

Amazing they could bring tall plants and trees on this fifth floor.

Noticed the glass panels on the side of the buildings, you could see the library inside there.

A sculpture in the visitors centre.

From the visitors's centre, I could view the surrounding area.

Do you remember the Iluma Shopping Centre that I posted in an earlier post.
I will show you more about Iluma in coming post.

My World Tuesday-National Library (Part 1)

This is our new National Library which is so big compared to the old library that I used to go during my childhood. Perhaps I used to go there during my younger days and I was sentimental about the demolition of the old library. You can view a photo of the old library in here

It is about 16 storey high and very spacious and the library was internationally recognised as an architectural icon and designed as a 'green' building, its deployment of various innovative 'green' features helps to keep the building operating in an energy-efficient way and to do its part for a more sustainable environment. (Read more from source.)

Looking up from the ground floor, the library has very beautiful glass panels.

Inside the library, the ground floor is so spacious and clean.

The outside of the lirary with nicely designed shelters.
I cant take much photos of the inside library, you have to look at the official website in here.
The main entrance of the library. Inside the escalators move only when the sensors capture anything in front of it to save energy. At first, I thought the escalators were faulty and I had to climb the escalators ...lol.
I will post the visitors centre with greenery and with a view of the surrounding area on the fifth floor tomorrow, so please come back and visit.
Please visit "That's my World" for other parts of the world.

Knitting

This is the book that I borrowed from the community library from Compass Point Shopping Mall last week.
It refreshed my memory of knitting.

The last time I knitted was when I was thirteen and in Secondary One during my home economics class.

Wow am glad that I managed to remember how to knit with the help of the book.

I hated the colour of this wool but I found it in my storeroom...lol. The wool was a leftover from my son's project. I think I will have to add some colourful beads at the end of the shawl when I finished. Actually, I am not sure what I am going to knit this into...hahaha

My good friend, CC from Texas will be very proud of me with my knitting. She is always there encouraging me to try out knitting or crocheting. Thank you CC. :)
When I am successful with this knitting project, I will buy more wools that are not yellow in colour...hehehe.....wish me luck.

Community Library in Shopping Mall-Compass Point

Going to the malls does not meant we are shopping. We can choose to visit the cinemas, bowling, karaoke or even to the library located inside the malls.

Can you spot the library on the highest floor (circled).

This is the Sengkang Community Library. It is like a branch of the main library. We have a few main libraries scattered around the island. Too bad I cant take any photos inside the library and it is sound proof inside the library. This is one of my spot when I want a quiet moment. :)
