Skywatch-Lightning Strikes

Now this is so scary. I know I must not stand near the windows whenever there is thunder and lightning.

But the lightning was going on continously and very fierce and it was a very good opportunity to snap the lightning...lol. I am very careful to have the window closed and standing away from the window, so I took this video through the glass panel of the window. I dont have to wait a long time to snap the lightning but am satisfied with this very short video of the lightning. But dont think I want to try another attempt to take photo of the lightning unless I am very far from it.

Screen shot of the lightning from the video.
You can see how huge and powerful the lightning was.

No wonder the poor merlion was hit by lightning the day before I took this video. (Article taken from local newspaper - Straits Times.)
This video was taken on 1st March 2009 around 3 plus in the afternoon.

  4. Fantastic job on the lightning. It doesnst look scary from your image, but like you I am terrified of thunder and lightning.

I'm sorry to hear about the damage to the Merlion.

  5. Alice, great photos. I, too, know you're not supposed to stand at the window but I would have done the same thing to get the photos. Too bad about the merlion - I hope it gets repaired.

And no, no polar bears at the glacier - they are all further north than where that photo was taken.

  13. Thanks for the concern of the Merlion. Yes, it would be repaired and this time a lightning conductor may be constructed there. But think of it, I think the Merlion saved many lives that day cause there were many tourists taking photo even though it was raining heavy that day. It bored the most of the lightning strike. :) The merlion is brave.

  14. although i must say that the second pic is fantastic, let me just say that you are very brave using ur cam against a lightning that strong. wow. some says lightning attrack anything that flashes so i caution myself on taking pics of these but i sometimes do without the flash on.

have a great weekend alice. :)

  15. Hahaha, am not brave but very determined to take photo of the lightning cause it was going on continously. Oh, I took this without flash and I dont use the puter or phone during storm too. Once I was chatting on phone during a heavy downpur and I could feel the phone being strike by lightning lol. Could hear a terrible buzz on the ear piece and quickly hang up and the line went dead for sometime.

  17. Oh, I saw someone post a photo of the Merlion in our USJ.com photography thread and he was wondering how much damage has been caused. I didn't understand the posting coz it was never mention that lightning struck it. I hope it is not beyond repair coz the Merlion is a famous symbol of Singapore.

Over here in Malaysia, we have heavy raining and lightning every evening. There has been serious flood in many parts of KL, landslip in Johore, and fear of landslides too. On Monday, a serious flood coz many damages to cars parked in a basement near offices along Gombak River in KL. I hope the heavy rainfall would stop.

You have a wonderful weekend too, Alice. We are having a long weekend here as Monday is a public holiday (Prophet Mohammad's Birthday). :o)

  18. Lightning is very powerful! A few years ago my chimney was struck by lightning. The result was that all my electrical appliances were damaged and my 16 solarpanels. Next month I will have new solarpanels and a lightning conductor. Your post was great and reminded me of my bolt of lightning. It's a pity that your Merlion was destroyed! Thanks for sharing.

  19. Wow these are beautiful and scary...Never got a shot of lightning....the second one is great....

  20. Yes, the lightning is quite frightening these few days.

JC, the Merlion is still standing. The lightning strike only one of the ear and some tiles drop off. It can be repair but it is being discussed whether to put a lightning rod on top of the merlion. The Merlion at Sentosa (so much taller) had a lightning rod on top of its head.

  21. Great lightening captures. I can never get a photo of them. I have tried many times.

  22. Alice: What a neat capture, I guess you would have to hit it perfect with only a camera.

  23. Oh i am so glad that i am not the only one that thinks standing by the window is not safe. My husband laughs at me when it thunders and lightning. You did good capturing the lightning

  25. You are very daring! You got good shots too. Well there is no gain if u don't take risks. :)

  26. Oh, I used my camera to video the lightning, it is difficult to take photo shot of the lightning. After videoing, I used the printkey to screen shot of the video.

  27. Well done Alice... I will have to try this... do you know I never thought about doing that...
